AOC Europe 2025 Pre-event Workshop
The AOC Europe 2025 Pre-convention course is full and no longer taking registrations. If you did not register but would like to attend this course if/when it is offered later this year, please email education@crows.org. AOC regularly adds onsite and virtual courses to its calendar and will be offering pre-convention courses this year at AOC 2025 in National Harbor, M.D., U.S.
What are pre-event workshops?
The AOC pre-event professional development workshops offer unique educational opportunities for focused professional development immediately before AOC events. Most workshops are eligible for credit and taught by AOC subject-matter experts.
Questions related to all pre-event professional development courses and/or their content can be directed to Lauren Schoener-Gaynor, Director of Strategic Partnerships and Professional Development at schoener-gaynor@crows.org.
Questions related to any pre-event professional development course registration can be directed to Samantha Kim, Professional Development Coordinator, at kim@crows.org.
Workshop Dates: 5 May 2025 | 08:00 - 16:00
Workshop Location: Hilton Rome Eur La Lama, Viale Europa 287, Rome, 00144, Italy
Workshop Length: 8 hrs
Description: This workshop provides an introduction to the use of metasurfaces in Defense, a subject explored further in the book Metasurface-driven Electronic Warfare. It covers how metasurfaces can add extra levels of dynamism to the electronic warfare (EW) problem at the physical level. Metasurfaces are artificially engineered structures that can provide arbitrary, reconfigurable responses in the transmission, reflection, and absorption of electromagnetic waves. Extensive research validated metasurfaces in the last couple of decades, and the community recently elected them as a key element for a civilian application, the 6G. However, in Defense, if many isolated papers are available in the open literature, their application is still unclear for many. This workshop connects the dots between metasurfaces and EW. It covers not only the so-called metasurface-based stealth technology, but also applications in Electronic Support (ES), Electronic Attack (EA), and Electronic Protection (EP). The workshop will also discuss emerging use cases for distributed EW in drone swarms.
Who Should Attend: The intended audience is those interested in the latest trends in EW, signals intelligence, and electrical engineering, whether they are operators, specialists, researchers, or businesspeople. Because the workshop covers the essentials in both metasurfaces and EW, no prior experience is required as long as the attendee can handle engineering concepts.

Instructor
Dr. Rafael Licursi is the author of "Metasurface-driven electronic warfare" (Wiley / IEEE Press). He is an antenna/radar researcher and electronic warfare (EW) consultant. Experienced in both the hardware and software parts of the EW problem, he now focuses on the innovative use of metasurfaces in this context. He earned his PhD in electronics with a focus on reconfigurable metasurfaces and multiband/wideband antennas at the Institut Polytechnique de Paris. Upon graduating from the Brazilian Air Force Academy, he began his career as a pilot and radar operator in maritime patrol aviation. His past experiences include EW Officer, Signal Processing Engineer, Signals Intelligence Researcher, and Antenna Engineer.
